Before & After

Also known as: Before/After, Transformation

A pair of photos showing a space pre- and post-redesign — the most effective format for marketing and motivation.

The before-and-after pairing is the most viral format in residential design. Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok are full of them, and the reason is psychological — the human brain rewards visible transformation, and a side-by-side compresses weeks of work into a single comparison.

For it to land, both images need careful framing. The "before" should be honest (not staged-bad-on-purpose) but cleanly shot — bad lighting and clutter in the before makes the after look fake. The "after" should be shot from the same angle and at similar lighting conditions so the eye can compare. Sliders that wipe between the two are even more compelling than side-by-side.

AI tools have made before-and-after photographs much cheaper to produce, especially for virtual staging in real estate. The risk is overpromising — if the actual property doesn't look like the after, listings underperform and trust erodes. Best practice: AI before-and-afters with disclosure, accurate to what a buyer could plausibly achieve with the space.
