In short

Storage up to the ceiling, compact appliances, one clear run of counter, better lighting: 12 ideas for a small kitchen, and how to preview a refresh with AI.

  • ✓ In a small kitchen, space is gained upward: cabinets to the ceiling, a working backsplash, storage inside doors.
  • ✓ One clear, continuous stretch of counter matters more than an island or gadgets.
  • ✓ Light, matte fronts and under-cabinet lighting make a kitchen feel bigger without major work.

A well-planned small kitchen is often nicer to cook in than a big, badly organized one: everything is within reach. But every inch has to work. Here are twelve ideas, from the easiest to the most ambitious.

Store upward

1. Take wall cabinets to the ceiling. The 12–16 in (30–40 cm) above standard wall cabinets holds what you rarely use (holiday dishes, backup supplies), and nothing gathers dust on top any more.

2. Make the backsplash work. A rail with hooks, a slim spice shelf, a magnetic knife strip: the counter clears instantly.

3. Use the inside of doors for lids, cleaning products or bags.

4. Choose drawers over doors in base cabinets: you see everything at once, and nothing gets lost at the back.

Free up the counter

5. Keep one continuous run of counter, ideally 24–36 in (60–90 cm) unbroken between the sink and the stove. That’s where you actually prep.

6. Go compact or integrated with appliances: an 18 in (45 cm) dishwasher, a two- or three-burner cooktop, a combination microwave oven.

7. A rolling cart or a fold-down table gives you extra counter that disappears when you’re done.

Bring in light

8. Light, matte fronts. Off-white, beige, light wood, pale sage. High gloss reflects everything, fingerprints included.

9. Light under the wall cabinets with LED strips: the counter is finally well lit, and the kitchen looks deeper.

10. Lighten the window: a slim blind or sheer curtain instead of a heavy one, and nothing on the sill.

Plan the flow

11. Respect the work triangle between fridge, sink and stove: short distances, nothing in the middle. Allow about 36 in (90 cm) in front of the cabinets, more if two people cook together.

12. Rethink the door: a pocket or sliding door, or no door at all, frees the space a swinging door needs.

Refresh without starting over

If the layout works, keep it. Replacing or repainting the fronts (with a paint made for cabinets), changing the handles and the backsplash, then adding under-cabinet lighting transforms a kitchen for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

See it before you commit

The question everyone asks: “what would it look like in sage green?” With Tigmi you upload a photo of your kitchen, choose kitchen and a style, and add your instructions: “keep the layout and appliances, matte sage green fronts, brass handles, white zellige backsplash, LED strips under the wall cabinets”. A couple of minutes later you see your own kitchen refreshed. On paid plans, Room Lock tells the AI to keep the walls and window as they are; always compare with your photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color is best for a small kitchen?

Light, matte fronts (off-white, warm beige, pale sage, light wood) reflect light without glare. A stronger color works as an accent: the backsplash, the stools, a single wall.

Can a small kitchen have an island?

Rarely. You need about 36 in (90 cm) of clearance all around, 48 in (120 cm) if two people cook. A rolling cart or a fold-down table adds counter space without blocking the room.

Can AI show me my kitchen redesigned?

Yes. Upload a photo, choose kitchen and a style, and describe the changes: new fronts, handles, backsplash, lighting. Tools like Tigmi keep the layout and window, so you see your kitchen refreshed rather than a different one.
